Fairfield Behavioral Health Services collaborates with faith-based organizations to provide the latest drug education, the impact drugs have on health, and to enhance faith-based communities’ abilities to educate its congregation, families, and community as well as implement strategies to improve their health.
“A lot of people in the community are affiliated with faith communities so what better way to get the word out on the dangers of drug use and abuse than by partnering with the faith community”, states Executive Director, Vernon L. Kennedy Sr., at Fairfield Behavioral Health Services.
FAN Partnership
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has awarded a $4.35 million grant to the Prevention Research Center (PRC) at the Arnold School of Public Health. The PRC at the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School was established through funding by the CDC in 1993, and has been funded continuously since that time. The new award will enable Dr. Sara Wilcox, a professor in the Department of Exercise Science, and her colleagues to implement and disseminate a faith-based program, called Faith, Activity and Nutrition (FAN). Designed to increase physical activity and encourage healthy eating in South Carolina, the program will have an emphasis on rural and underserved populations.
Program Details
Wilcox and her colleagues developed the FAN program with funding from a National Institutes of Health grant in 2006. The new funding will allow Wilcox, working with collaborators at USC, Clemson University, Fairfield Behavioral Health Services, the State Baptist Young Woman’s Auxiliary Health Ministry and the S.C. Conference of the United Methodist Church, to implement and evaluate the program in South Carolina churches. The grant also will involve working with DHEC and other community groups in the areas of physical activity and healthy eating. The first phase of the study will focus on Fairfield County, and the second phase will expand the FAN program statewide.
Program Details:
Some of the primary responsibilities of the new grant scheduled to start September 30, 2014 will be to:
- Attend Fairfield Community Health Partners meetings and advise the USC PRC on this research project
- Recruit two community health educators to be trained in how to deliver the Faith, Activity, and Nutrition program to churches.
- Participate in the training of the community health educators.
- Recruit and train 60 churches to be trained in Faith, Activity, and Nutrition: 40 in Year 2 and 20 in Year 3.
- Deliver brief technical assistance to the trained churches
- Work with trained churches to obtain implementation plans.
- Help coordinate USC PRC site visits and interviews with churches, leaders and USC PRC
Health Ministry
The of goal of the Health Ministry Initiative is to help faith based organizations to implement a comprehensive Health Ministry to address health from a holistic perspective and encourage members to not only make healthier lifestyle choices, but to also create environments that support healthy behaviors — at home, church, and in the broader community. Faith based organizations will work to increase the overall health and well-being (spiritual, physical and mental) of its members and families.

Faith Based Quarterly Meetings
During the two year period of May 2012 – September 29, 2014, Fairfield Behavioral Health Services was awarded two grants under the theme “All Aboard for Healthy Fairfield” and umbrella of Fairfield Community Health Partners from the Healthy South Carolina Initiative including grant funders such as SCDHEC, Eat Smart Move More SC, and the SC Tobacco Free Collaborative. Fairfield Behavioral Health Services’ target audience was faith based organizations in Fairfield County. The overarching goal was to reduce deaths and disabilities often associated with tobacco use, obesity and heart disease. Year 1 focused on tobacco education efforts. Year 2 focused on helping faith based organizations implement a comprehensive Health Ministry to address health from a holistic perspective and encourage members to not only make healthier lifestyle choices, but to also create environments that support healthy behaviors — at home, church, and in the broader community.
More Information
Faith Based Quarterly Meetings was initiated in Year 2 to provide a setting for faith based organizations to collectively receive and share:
- Updates on Grant Objectives
- Progress/Needs with Tobacco Education Efforts
- Progress/Needs with Health Ministry
- Lessons Learned
- Recognition for their efforts
- New education materials
- Information about community resources and services
Though Fairfield Behavioral Health Services’ grant ended September 29, 2014 with the Health South Carolina Initiative, it was decided by the organization and participating faith based organizations that the quarterly meetings should continue, especially since the new grant project with the USC Prevention Research Center to implement FAN was to begin September 30, 2014.
